A very important player in world football will turn 75 on Tuesday. But Bayern legend Gerd Müller doesn’t notice anything about his birthday. The former scorer with an unmatched eye for goals is cared for in a home like a 24-hour nursing case.
His wife Uschi Müller says of “Bild”: “He eats almost nothing, can barely swallow, stays in bed for almost 24 hours and only has a few waking moments. It’s so nice when you open your eyes for a moment. “
In 2015, Müller’s dementia became known. But this year his condition is getting worse because the house has to adhere to strict measures from the crown: his Uschi cannot visit Gerd for three months.
“Gerd sleeps until the end”
She sadly describes: “I couldn’t explain it to Gerd.” The emotional pain is so great that the 1974 world champion has cramps and never gets out of bed. Since then he has been in the intensive care unit. Müller is considered a candidate for death, so Uschi can visit him again.
Gerd sleeps towards the end. He has closed his eyes, is sleepy, rarely opens his mouth and is given pureed food. He’s calm and peaceful, and I don’t think he has to suffer either. He’s sleeping slowly, ”says the wife of the Bayern striker.
With his 365 Bundesliga goals in 427 appearances and an incredible 68 goals in 62 international appearances, Müller leaves countless defenders defenseless. Now he’s helpless himself, but he’s by no means the only star of the 60s and 70s suffering from dementia.
Are head balls to blame?
In England, after the death of legend Nobby Stiles († 78) last Friday, an oppressive question became the focus of the media and fans. Is there a connection between head balls and leather balls, which used to be hard as cement, especially in the rain, and dementias?
Stiles is the fourth player on the 1966 England world championship team to die after suffering from dementia. Bobby Charlton (83) is also said to suffer from dementia like Müller. The “Daily Mail” is now raising money for the victims of the headlines to receive adequate care in old age. But help comes too late for some of the legends.
