Swiss wants to pay bonuses to some top managers, as reported by the “Tages-Anzeiger”. This compensation relates to 2019, an extremely successful year for the airline. In the year Corona 2020, however, the situation is extremely precarious: the federal government had to help Switzerland with a loan of 1.5 billion. The anger among financial politicians from left to right was palpable this week. Even parties that disagree on principle on day-to-day politics unite to avoid the bonus round.
“When the finance commission promptly notified the loan for Switzerland, the Federal Council declared that the bonuses for the executive suite were excluded,” says SP National Councilor Celine Widmer (42, ZH). Therefore, his party withdrew a motion that wanted to make this explicit. “For me, it doesn’t matter if the bonuses are from last year or the current year,” says Widmer. Because without this guarantee from the state government, parliament would have insisted on a bonus ban.
Indecent managers
SVP National Councilor Lars Guggisberg (43, BE) points in the same direction. It says: “Switzerland owes a lot to the Swiss taxpayers.” Your bosses should know “what’s right”: Bonus payments, even for 2019, are unacceptable. “It’s just about saving the thousands of jobs at Swiss. Managers who are now thinking about their own wallets are acting indecent. “
At the next meeting of the finance commission, Widmer and Guggisberg will request that the state government block the transfer of the bonuses. “With a decision of the Finance Commission endorsed, the Federal Council can and must exert the necessary pressure on the Swiss leadership,” Guggisberg is convinced.
No support bonuses
The SP goes one step further. In a separate proposal, National Councilor Tamara Funiciello (30, BE) demands that no company that is supported in any way by the state during the Covid crisis will be able to distribute bonuses. So federal funds mean a loan, as well as À-fons-perdu contributions and short-term work compensation. Exceptions are possible if the management base salary is set too low.
“If a company uses federal funds, it cannot be that the bonuses are distributed at the same time. It actually makes sense, doesn’t it? », Says Funiciello. When it comes to bonuses, so-called “business risk” is often used as an argument. But who is currently at risk? The thousands of employees who have to fear for their jobs ”.
