According to Health Minister Alain Berset, the Federal Council expects the cantons to further toughen measures to contain the coronavirus in their area, depending on the situation. It is important to act regionally in a more different way than in March.
The differences are striking, Berset said in an interview with the “Neue Zürcher Zeitung”. For example, Valais has a 14-day incidence of new cases that is more than five times that of Solothurn. This can be seen in the situation in hospitals, which is much more tense in Valais than in Solothurn.
“He did not lose control”
Berset said no when asked if Switzerland had lost control of the pandemic. The situation is certainly much worse than a month ago. At the same time, the cantons have significantly increased their contact tracing capabilities.
He assumes the measures are sufficient to prevent hospitals from being overloaded, Berset continued. “If it is not enough, we still have time to decide on a further adjustment.”
I followed the plan
Berset rejects the charge that the Federal Council reacted too late. “We react and follow the plan that we prepare with the cantons in the summer. When the curve began to rise, we immediately started additional measures. I have contacted the cantons on several occasions and asked them to act, ”continued the Minister of Health.
Cases had already doubled in August and September, but very slowly over a period of one month. In October the time was reduced to a week very quickly and surprisingly for everyone. The Scientific Working Group informed you of this rapid increase on October 16. Just two days later, the Federal Council decided to toughen it up. (SDA)
