In Switzerland and Liechtenstein, the Federal Office of Public Health (FOPH) received 9386 new confirmed coronavirus infections in 24 hours. In addition, the FOPH recorded 31 new deaths and 287 hospital admissions, according to a notification Thursday.

The 9386 reported cases represent a daily record 8616 corona infections were known on Wednesday. The increase in hospitalizations in one day is even more drastic: while 149 hospital admissions were reported to the BAG on Wednesday, there were already 287 hospitalizations on Thursday.

The number of recently reported deaths increased from 24 to 31 in one day. The number of deaths from Covid 19 in Switzerland and Liechtenstein totaled 1985.

35,230 tests were performed in 24 hours. The total number of tests rises to just under 1.9 million. 8.3 percent of these were positive, indicating a new infection. According to the BAG, this so-called positivity rate had risen to 22.7 percent in the past two weeks.

On Thursday there were also 31,334 people in isolation and 24,948 contacts in quarantine. 13,594 people were also in quarantine because they came from risk countries.

Doubling in a week

In addition to the daily figures, the weekly BAG comparison released Thursday provides even better insight into the development of the corona pandemic. Last week, a total of 39,441 new laboratory-confirmed cases were recorded. This means that the number of cases has doubled again compared to the previous week. The increase in cases is registered in all cantons and all age groups, writes the BAG.

In addition, 623 new hospitalizations were reported in relation to Covid 19 disease. Compared to the previous week, the number of hospitalizations increased by 43 percent. The number of hospitalizations has increased in almost all the cantons. On average, 128 people were in an intensive care unit in connection with Covid 19 disease.

The death toll was 89 last week, up from 38 the week before. So it has more than doubled. The number of hospitalizations and deaths could increase due to the delay in data collection.

A total of 177,718 tests were conducted last week. Compared to the previous week, this corresponds to an increase of 40 percent. The percentage of positive tests increased from 15.4 percent to 22.5 percent in a weekly comparison.
