It should be a project with broadcasts in Thurgau and beyond the borders. With the proceeds from the sale of the Thurgauer Kantonalbank participation certificates, the Weinfelden fairs want to build the largest event hall in Thurgau.

There are 127 million francs available for special projects in the canton of Thurgau. Some ideas have already been presented to the governing council, and now Weinfelden is also proposing a variant of how the money could be used.

The Weinfelden fairs and the Weinfelden city want to build a cultural and experience center of Thurgau. Instead of the parking spaces in TKB’s Roos operations center, a multifunctional hall will be built, which on one side contains a Thurgau market and an event hall that can be used for sports, culture and other events.

Exhibition place without room

“Weinfelden is known as a trade fair venue. But we have a major deficiency, we do not have a room, “says Peter Joss, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Messen Weinfelden. “The Governing Council’s Strategy 2040, which also targets this center, has given us even more wings.” He is convinced that the Thurgau Adventure and Culture Center project strengthens networking, increases the attractiveness of the region and is also an economic factor.

“Events for the population also have an emotional effect. The region and the canton benefit from this. “

The 3,500-square-meter ballroom should accommodate events with up to 6,000 guests. In addition, there is the attached Thurgau market, which can be accessed separately. “The market could be open one or two days a week, and when events take place in the great hall,” says exhibition board member Hermann Lei. “Here, cantonal and regional producers could offer food, luxury goods and medicines from Thurgau, and make it a special experience.”

Thurgau lacks a room for large cultural or economic events. There is only the pentorama in Amriswil that goes in this direction. Hermann Lei emphasizes that the Wega fair will not be affected by the pavilion. This will continue to take place in the city center. “But the other trade shows in Weinfelden could benefit.”

Construction for 18 million francs

The director of the fair, Gregor Wegmüller, foresees costs of around 18 million for the construction of the pavilion with underground parking.

“We could imagine contributing three million and the city of Weinfelden is also very positive about the financial participation.”

As a client and future operator of the room, he has presented the project to the governing council for the remaining approximately 12 million.

The room will be built on this site. The parking spaces of the TKB operations center in Roos would be moved to an underground car park.

“The Weinfelden location would be ideal for a Thurgau project. It is centrally located, we are the golden mean. “

With up to eight fairs a year, Weinfelden is already the fair capital of Thurgau. In Weinfelden there are also many companies and several cantonal associations. Also, the Thurgau center deserves to be considered for a major project again. “Other regions have received hospitals and museums, in the center of Thurgau it can still be a bit ‘verliide’.”

Location in the TKB

The initiators have chosen the TKB operations center parking lot in Roos as a possible location. This location is at the western entrance to the city and can be reached on foot in 10 minutes from the train station. “As a city, we are very happy that the Weinfelden fairs have entered this project in this way,” says Mayor Max Vögeli.

“It would strengthen cohesion in Thurgau and make the canton more attractive.”

He hopes very much that a real project can emerge from this vision, says Max Vögeli. “The fair capital, Weinfelden, has a wealth of technical know-how and the fair professionals would keep operations going.”

The initiators hope that the governing council will consider the project and support it with the participation certificate of TKB million. They expect the government to make a decision next year. If this is positive for the Thurgau cultural and experience center, it could at best open in 2024.
