Switzerland reports one of the highest rates of new corona infections. Just a few weeks ago we were a role model in Europe, today we are the negative example. The latest figures prove it.
- Laboratory Confirmed Cases: They have doubled in the last 6 days.
- Hospitalizations: they have doubled in the last 8 days.
- Intensive care patients: doubled in the last 7 days.
- Deaths: doubled in the last 7½ days.
Yesterday, Andreas Stettbach, medical director of the Federal Council, warned about the overload of hospitals: “Without further measures, it is sufficient for acute beds for 15 days, for intensive care units for 10 days.”
That would mean: all patients can no longer be cared for.
People who still had a chance would have to die.
The Federal Council failed in these difficult days. It caused Switzerland to slide in the direction of catastrophe. Instead of acting, the Health Minister, Alain Berset (48), always postponed next week, the next meeting.
Now, finally, he wants to implement a package of measures, a series of arduous but necessary regulations to change things at the last second. It is a coherent catalog that is adapted to the historical dimension of the crisis and is based on the recommendations of the scientific working group. It would go into effect at midnight today, Wednesday. And this is Berset’s plan:
1. Restaurants and catering establishments close at 10 pm.
2. Clubs and dance halls are completely closed
3. No or very few spectators at soccer, ice hockey, and cultural events.
4. Private meetings with more than 10 participants are not allowed.
5. There are no public events with more than 25, 20 or even 15 participants.
6. Mandatory mask where there are a large number of people. Not in the country, not in the forest, but in cities, in residential areas, and where shops, restaurants, or other gathering places attract the public
7. Urgent recommendation for the home office in all cases where you can work from home.
Today the government of our country meets. It is a crucial meeting. All seven must accept or reject this seven-point package, decide whether or not to support these strict measures.
It depends on the Federal Council: if you reject the Berset Plan, you risk people’s lives.
If you reject Berset’s plan, a second blockade can no longer be avoided, with devastating consequences for Switzerland, for all of us, for each one of us.
The Federal Council has always appealed to the population to assume its responsibility. Now the population is appealing to the Federal Council to finally assume the responsibility for which it has been elected and to do what can only emerge from it in times of national emergency: give Swiss citizens clear and consistent rules. Ensure compliance!
