- One in four children in Switzerland regularly experiences psychological violence.
- Every 20th child is regularly physically punished.
- This is written by the Swiss Foundation for the Protection of Children, which commissioned a study from the University of Friborg.
The current study was carried out in 2019. The results of the current study sample show a slight decrease in physical and psychological violence compared to the 2017 survey, as Child Protection Switzerland writes in a press release. Despite the lower overall values, there is a stable subgroup of parents who include physical violence in their education.
As before, younger children are more affected by corporal punishment than older children: 4.4 percent of parents reported that they regularly use physical violence. In 2017, it was 5.79 percent. 23.2 percent of parents report regular behavior towards their children that includes aspects of psychological violence. In 2017, the proportion was 25.15 percent.
Leaves deep marks
The study shows that violence in education is practiced in all situations. However, there are risk factors that can be detrimental to children: if the economic or emotional stability of the parents is hampered, for example. The habitual physical and psychological violence in parenting causes great suffering and leaves deep marks on the health and behavior of affected children.
Child Protection Switzerland points out that the special session of the National Council this Thursday and Friday will address a postulate of the deputy of the CVP of Freiburg, Christine Bulliard-Marbach. This would entrust the Federal Council to examine how the protection of children against violence in their education could be anchored in the civil code.
