The Green Alliance and Green Liberals win seats on the Grand Council. At the same time, the red-green majority in government is wavering. District President Elisabeth Ackermann (GB) has to go to the second ballot.
The interim results are surprising: after mail-in votes have been counted in the Basel governing council elections, bourgeois parties are confident that the red-green majority in government that has existed since 2005 could be reversed. The SP and the Green Alliance hope to keep their seats in the second vote with a parforce.
After counting the postal votes, only three former members of the government are above the absolute majority. Former CFO Tanja Soland (SP), Health Director Lukas Engelberger (CVP) and Education Director Conradin Cramer (LDP) were elected.
National Councilor Beat Jans (SP) and possibly career changer Stephanie Eymann (LDP) make the leap to the seven-member government. However, with 23,725 votes among those who voted by letter, his choice was very limited. Since the absolute majority can still change with votes at the polls, its choice is not yet certain.
Two above have to do an extra round
The Director of Justice and Security, Baschi Dürr (FDP), and the District President, Elisabeth Ackermann (Greens), lost the absolute majority. The latter has come under fire in recent months for his decision to dismiss the director of the Historical Museum Marc Fehlmann.
According to the provisional results, Grand Councilor Kaspar Sutter (SP) and Grand Councilor Esther Keller (GLP) must also proceed to the second ballot. Senior Vice President Candidate, Attorney Stefan Suter and Christine Kaufmann (Executive Vice President) have no chance.
In the race for the regional council, neither candidate achieved an absolute majority. Stephanie Eymann (LDP) stands opposite the current district president, Elisabeth Ackermann (Greens) and Esther Keller (GLP).
Green wave hits the Great Council
Counting the votes sent by post shows that the trend in Switzerland is also continuing in the Parliament in Basel. Both the Green Alliance (+3) and the Green Liberals (+4) are gaining ground in the Grand Council. For the first time, the LPG reaches the parliamentary groups in Basel and now has one more seat in parliament than the FDP.
Liberals, like the SVP, are among the losers of the day. Both lose three seats on the Grand Council.
The PLD surpasses the SVP and is now the strongest bourgeois force in the Basel parliament, without, however, having won seats. However, the SP has lost most of the seats. The Social Democrats lose four seats. However, the SP remains unchallenged at the top with 30 seats on the Grand Council.
This is also an extrapolation. The final result and the final allocation of places is expected at 9:00 p.m.
