The number is shocking: yesterday, the Federal Office of Public Health reported 6,634 new cases of Covid-19: 26.5 percent of those examined are infected with the virus! Switzerland has become a crown hotspot.
Martin Ackermann, president of the Corona Scientific Task Force, addressed the nation in the afternoon with the following status report:
- New infections, hospitalizations and deaths are doubling each week.
- All intensive care beds will be occupied between November 5 and 18.
- The country is reaching the limit with its testing capabilities.
Ackermann appeal: “We no longer have time to wait.”
Switzerland must now do everything possible to prevent two scenarios: first, an overload of the health system in which not all seriously ill people can be treated; second, a new blockade that would cause enormous economic damage.
It would be a catastrophe if people died in hospital corridors. Then there would no longer be a need for a blockade: the country would automatically stop!
In order for the worst-case scenario not to happen, we must all give up entertainment now. Therefore, the end of thousands of people in a hockey hall, with hot dance parties in the disco, with all the unnecessary groups of infection risks, because schools, restaurants and public transport must be able to continue to operate with strict protection concepts.
Of course, sports clubs, bar operators, discos and catering companies must be supported if they have to close again for no fault of their own; Switzerland can afford it.
In calmer times, we can be happy that our state functions regardless of who is a member of the government or who is a member of the federal government. But now that leadership is really needed, it is lacking.
The cantons are currently deciding this and that in an uncoordinated way, leaning overburdened for being too harsh and vice versa …
The man who could now fulfill his life’s task is called Alain Berset. Why doesn’t the Minister of Health take matters into his own hands, seek solutions with the cantons, bring new ideas to the Federal Council, move forward, and do so immediately?
The virus is not waiting for Bern’s sluggish business to start moving. Therefore, we must not wait for Berset to wake up, but act ourselves. Because one conclusion is already obvious today: it is not just due to the persistence of the new virus that Switzerland has gone from being a role model to a hotspot for the crown. We just weren’t disciplined enough! On the way back to a supposed normalcy, the simplest precautionary measures were often forgotten.
Last week I was in Greece almost virus-free: disinfecting is as mandatory when entering all buildings as putting on a protective mask. In the restaurant everyone keeps as much distance as possible, on each table there are bottles of hand cleaner, buffet breakfasts have been abolished. And what do I experience, in Switzerland, when I go shopping for the first time? The disinfectant in the Coop inlet is empty …
We have to overcome this second wave, and together we can too. Because there is a certainty: no pandemic lasts forever. The smarter we act, the faster it will finish.
