  • From now on, only 1000 people will be allowed in Basel’s St. Jakob-Park.
  • This is because the canton of Basel-Stadt prohibits large events with more than 1000 attendees.
  • The canton of Valais is moving even harder: there, fans will no longer be able to enter the stadium.
  • The measures are being taken due to the spread of the coronavirus and will be applied initially in Basel-Stadt until the end of the year, in Valais until the end of November.

After Bern on Sunday, the canton of Basel-Stadt has now also banned large events with more than 1000 visitors.

This means that in St. Jakob-Park, the home of FC Basel, only 1,000 spectators can be present again. In the last home game on October 4 against FC Luzern, 9257 fans were in the stadium with a protection concept.

Restriction until the end of the year for now

The new measures are being taken due to the rapid increase in corona cases. “With the increase in the number of cases, the risk of an overspread event increases with far-reaching consequences,” the press release says. Protecting contact tracing and medical care is now important, especially in hospitals.

At the end of the year, the Basel health department “will no longer issue new permits for major events with more than 1,000 people.”

Ghost games for Zion

The canton of Valais goes one step further. Prohibits contact sports (soccer, basketball, hockey, martial arts, etc.). This does not apply to professional sports. There, however, the audience is excluded.

In other words: at FC Sion home games, spectators will no longer be able to enter the tourbillon. The two ice hockey clubs of the Swiss League, EHC Visp and HC Sierre, are also affected by the new regulation.
