Switzerland is included in the 7-day average 312 new infections per million inhabitants. The curve climbs steeply. However, the anti-crown measures are limited to a mask requirement in buildings and on public transportation, but there are no curfews. Important events continue to take place in most cantons. This is not the case in much of Europe.
Belgium
Belgium is particularly affected by the coronavirus across Europe: 700 new infections per million inhabitants in an average of 7 days. The government is now trying to curb the rapid increase: cafes, bars and restaurants have to close for at least two weeks and a curfew since midnight has been in effect since last night. The requirement for a tighter mask should help as well, but people remain skeptical.
Michael Rauchstein, SRF Brussels correspondent:
New infections put the healthcare system at risk. This is why you shouldn’t do a corona test if you don’t have any symptoms, to ease the labs. If you can, you should work from home and outside your own apartment. You can only meet a person without a mask. They definitely want to avoid a second lockdown and are now hoping that the Belgians will adhere better to the regulations.
Austria
Austria is also tightening its measures in the fight against the corona virus. The country also registers 154 new infections per million population In an average of 7 days, there are far fewer cases than Switzerland. To avoid a further increase, Chancellor Sebastian Kurz has announced contact restrictions: As of Friday, a maximum of six people can gather indoors for private meetings and twelve people outdoors, preferably always wearing a mask. In addition, the curfew for restaurants was advanced to 10 pm in September in some federal states.
Peter Balzli, SRF correspondent in Austria:
Compared to Switzerland, Austria has mainly adopted the toughest Corona measures from the start. With great success and great acceptance among the population. However, at first, the same rules applied to almost the entire country. Meanwhile, it has become a regional mosaic of measures, the success of which is no longer clearly evident. If the numbers continue to rise now, then not only will the Austrian healthcare system have a problem, but also the government very soon.
France
In France, new infections are higher than in Switzerland, although not many. 346 new infections per million population they are counted here in an average of 7 days. In the fight against the drastic increase in the number of crown, night curfews have been in effect in Paris and other metropolises since the weekend. This affects about 20 million people. A health emergency has also been back in effect since Saturday. With it, the government can enforce the restrictions by ordinance.
Alexandra Gubser, SRF France correspondent:
It is not yet a blockade in France. But an extreme slowdown. From Saturday there is a curfew between 9:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m. for restaurants, theaters, cinemas and shops in metropolitan areas such as Paris, Lyon or Marseille. The strict mask requirement applies across the country anyway, whether it’s on the street, in stores, or in the office. However, it will only be possible to see in about 2 weeks whether these measures can reduce the exorbitantly high number of infections.
While the lockdown is getting closer in other countries, Switzerland remains relatively relaxed, for now.
