The canton of Bern bans major events from Monday: YB and three National League clubs have to withdraw their audience.
After the Federal Council gave the population new instructions on how to deal with Corona on Sunday, no earthquake was assumed in the local sport. Despite the epidemiologically tense situation, no further restrictions were expected.
According to the government, big events are still possible. The authority for implementation remains with the cantons. And it is precisely at this level that the first canton, Bern, hit the handbrake on Sunday afternoon. Due to the rapidly increasing number of cases, the responsible executive decided to ban major events with more than 1000 people on Monday.
Again near a “ghost backdrop”
Applied to professional clubs in the top Swiss football and ice hockey league, this means that until further notice, only a maximum of 1000 visitors are allowed to games. This affects the Young Boys champion, who last had 11,660 spectators in Wankdorf against Vaduz.
Also in ice hockey, at the moment SC Bern, EHC Biel and SCL Tigers in the upper house can no longer occupy a maximum of two-thirds of the available seats. This rule was introduced on October 1, subject to the corresponding protection concept. In a first statement on Sunday night, the SCB took note of the decision with astonishment and the young people were also very irritated. In its press release, the canton of Bern did not specify a date until when the “red” measure would be applied.
Since, according to the Swiss government, the responsibility for holding events, including sporting events and matches, rests with the cantons, this can take on absurd proportions in practice. The standards used are different for all clubs and chaos seems very likely.
