No candidate reaches an absolute majority. Martial Courtet, CVP man, is ahead. The second ballot is on November 8.
- The first round of elections to the governing councils in the canton of Jura ends without a defined elector.
- In the second vote, the CVP can calculate its chances of expelling the former David Eray from the Christian Social PCSI and regain its second executive seat, which they lost in March.
- At the top is the former CVP Minister of Education Martial Courtet.
Eray finished in the race for five seats in government with 6,987 votes (26.5 percent) in sixth place behind. He was overtaken in the first vote by Stéphane Babey, who was a new candidate for CVP. The president of the community reached 7,721 votes (29.2 percent).
These two candidates were clearly behind the other previous government councilors, who, however, also did not obtain an absolute majority.
The first result was achieved by Minister Martial Courtet of the CVP with 43.6 percent, followed by his colleague from the SP, Nathalie Barthoulot, with almost 43.2 percent of the votes. In third place, the SP Minister, Rosalie Beurret Siess, sat with just under 42.2 percent of the vote. She had only been elected to the executive branch in March. The former FDP government adviser, Jacques Gerber, received 41.7 percent of the votes.
They all got almost the same number of votes. In absolute numbers, the range was between 11,008 and 11,516 votes.
The rest of the SVP candidates, the Greens and the left-wing alternatives ended up being hit in the rear. Celine Robert-Charrie Linder of the Greens did better here, with 3,662 votes (13.9 percent).
Previous benefit
The CVP, long the party in the Jura government with the largest number of seats, did not defend the vacant seat of Charles Juillard in March. To get it back, the party raced with Martial Courtet and the Mayor of Alle, Stéphane Babey.
The five ministers who are running for a new term could benefit from a bonus over the previous ones. This advantage is reinforced by its management in the Covid-19 crisis. The government, and in particular the Minister of Health, Jacques Gerber (FDP), have emerged stronger from the crisis, although the number of cases has increased in recent days.
Political switzerland is watching
Jura is the first canton in French-speaking Switzerland to renew its government after the federal elections in October 2019 and the start of the crown crisis. Therefore, the outcome of these elections arouses interest that goes far beyond the region and is a test for national parties.
Due to the increasing number of infections, the entire electoral campaign took place in a special context with protective measures. The candidates had to adapt their electoral campaign to the particular situation.
