After the first appearances in the great showcase, Cédric Brunner thinks: “We have reached the first division. The successful start to the season with 4 points from 2 games gave a boost. Everyone is super happy. ”On his debut, the promoted Arminia Bielefeld had kept a distance against the favorite Frankfurt (1: 1), against Cologne he was already followed by the top three (1: 0).

Werder Bremen’s 0: 1 spoiled the balance a bit. It was an unnecessary defeat. We mostly slept during the first half ”, analyzes the Swiss defender.

Rotated and benefited again

The uncertainty before the start of the championship was unexpectedly great. Bundesliga returnees were embarrassed in the first round of the cup against regional division RW Essen. Coach Uwe Neuhaus had announced the co-competition appearance for the final rehearsal and wanted to have the same permanent staff.

That was a shock that I had to digest first.

In the cup, Brunner was part of the starting lineup, but not 5 days later against Eintracht. “It was a surprise that I had to digest first,” recalls Brunner.

Brunner’s replacement, Nathan de Medina, was injured early in the opening game, which meant the Swiss quickly returned to the team. Therefore, he is already in the 257 league minutes. In the following video he evaluates his personal performance so far.

A horse kiss at the wrong time

For him and his colors, almost everything goes a little faster in the new sports environment. «The passes arrive with more precision than in the 2nd Bundesliga. I was amazed that there were more fights. The games are physically a little bit tougher and more intense, ”Brunner said. In order to do your job on defense successfully, you need to be more alert and focused.

One league down, the second-division champions were used to dominating games and demanding more ball possession. This game philosophy had to adapt. “Still, the coach didn’t want to throw it all away,” says Brunner.

Down FCZ, up Bielefeld

The 26-year-old Zurich Cédric Brunner left his FCZ training club in the summer of 2018 and ventured abroad to join the German second division team Arminia Bielefeld. The defensive force had been part of the professional team of the city of Zurich since the 2014/15 season, the baptism of fire of the Super League was due on May 18, 2014 for 10 minutes against Aarau. At the end of the 2015/16 season, Brunner had to enter the Challenge League with FCZ, but then won the Swiss Cup. Two years later and after another cup trophy, they parted ways.

In his third year in Germany, Brunner is involved in the first division with Arminia. The right-back has played 55 games (3 goals and 6 assists) for the North Rhine-Westphalia team.

This is the creed they want to face the great Bayern Munich on Saturday night. Brunner is up to the Herculean task. According to the club, its use is questionable after a horse kiss received during training.

Point claim must remain realistic

Outside especially, the underdog must be challenged. “All the opponents will be very uncomfortable, because each and every one of them has a world-class format,” predicts the 26-year-old, “whether I meet Serge Gnabry, Leroy Sané, Douglas Costa or Kingsley Coman. It doesn’t matter: I don’t want you to choose a single one “.

As for the forecast, you don’t want to lean too far out the window, either. “We have to bet that Bavaria doesn’t have the best day to be able to calculate anything at all.” Perhaps the winner of the Champions League should be denied mental freshness after the Nations League and the cup match against 1. FC Düren. “But simply: even his B-Elf is on a higher level,” says Brunner.

After the duel promoted vs. Masters against a ‘phantom backdrop’, Arminia continues against Wolfsburg and again at home against Dortmund with the next big hit. Brunner and Co. will inevitably make it to the 1st Bundesliga. His realistic statement is: “We have to score points against those opponents who are in our region of the table.”
