The No. 5 seed from Switzerland had already struggled in the first two matches: the quarter-finals were now the end of the line for Wawrinka. Against tournament number 2, Canadian Denis Shapovalov, had to admit defeat in 2 sets after exactly 100 minutes with 4: 6 and 5: 7.

The first sentence was particularly bitter for the Swiss: he started better, but could not take advantage of the 4 break opportunities. On the other hand, Shapovalov Wawrinka broke in the only chance when the score was 3: 2. The Swiss couldn’t react after that.
