This story shook the world: Chloe Wiegand († 1) fell 45 meters to her death. Her grandfather Salvatore Anello dropped her out of the window of the Freedom of the Seas cruise ship in a Puerto Rico port on July 7, 2019.
After a long dispute between the Royal Caribbean Cruises shipping company and the family, the grandfather relented: Anello pleaded guilty before the Supreme Court of the Puerto Rican capital of San Juan on Thursday morning, reports “El Vocero.”
Confession through the Internet
The guilty plea was made digitally, however, because Anello is currently at his home in the United States. Anello previously said that she hugged her granddaughter first, but then released one arm as they both reached out to hit the glass.
The shipping company recently published a video in which you can see the grandfather leaning out of the window, where the accident occurred a little later. Therefore, the man should have known that the window was open, the shipping company argued.
Grandpa protested his innocence for a long time.
Anello, however, initially insisted that he assumed the window was closed. “I thought there was a window,” he says in interviews. The family sued Royal Caribbean Cruises. The charge: negligence. The window on the 11th floor in the children’s play area should not be open.
Anello is charged with negligent manslaughter and now faces up to three years in prison. However: his family continues to support him. The confession is in the best interest of the family, the lawyer told “Mirror.” (szm)
