After no new corona diseases were recorded in the canton of Appenzell Innerrhoden for a long time during the summer, the situation has changed since September. In a few weeks, according to a press release from the professional ethics committee, the total number of infected people in the canton went from 25 to more than 80. In the week of October 5 to 11, the number increased by 41 cases.

The Governor and Head of the Department of Health and Social, Monika Rüegg Bless, declared at the request that the infections “spread throughout the canton.” You cannot distinguish a group, a super-propagator, or a person who has infected many. The infections occurred within the family, at work, or in restaurants. “Many also do not know where they could have been infected,” says Rüegg Bless.

The measures will be decided on Tuesday

Next Tuesday, the professional ethics committee wants to advise on possible measures to contain infections. Among other things, a mask requirement could be introduced in public spaces, as well as the requirement to present a protection concept for events with fewer than 300 people. But these are only ideas, clarifies the head of the department of health and social. All the areas where there are currently a higher number of infections are under discussion. The canton of Appenzell Innerrhoden will coordinate with the cantons of eastern Switzerland to find solutions that are as uniform as possible.

The current course of the disease is quite mild, says Rüegg Bless. Only individual cases are in hospital care. The number of hospitalizations is stable, but is constantly monitored.

Public awareness

In the context of journalistic reports, the Innerrhod government tries to remind the population of the rules of distance and hygiene. Rüegg Bless added that awareness is particularly important at this time. “We had no infections for most of the summer. People have already assumed that the pandemic no longer affects us. “A fallacy, as we see now. The canton follows with concern the high number of infections. Especially since the flu season is just around the corner, which of all ways will affect the health system.

Monika Rüegg Bless now has high hopes for the crown rapid tests, which are currently still in the testing phase. However, they must be approved at the beginning of the year. Then it could be quickly determined if the patient is sick with the flu or Covid-19.
