What are the four iPhones called and what are the differences between them?

In the future there will be two kinds of iPhone. The iPhone 12 (from CHF 879) and the iPhone Mini (from CHF 779) belong to the middle class. The latter is a smaller version of the iPhone 12 and should appeal to customers who found the iPhone 11 too big last year. The luxury class includes the iPhone 12 Pro (from CHF 1129) and the iPhone 12 Pro Max (from CHF 1229). In more expensive iPhones, the Max model is not only bigger, but it also has a theoretically better camera. The main difference between the middle class and the luxury class is the camera, which has more lenses and functions in the Pro models.

What is the highlight of the new iPhones?

Apple is catching up with the competition and is now relying on 5G as well. All four new iPhones are compatible with the fastest and most future-oriented wireless standard. A test has to show how 5G affects the battery and how fast the new iPhones really are on Swiss cell phone networks. But anyone who only buys a cell phone every four to five years should only wait for this technology, which will be even more important in the future. Overall, Apple’s 5G entry will make it completely suitable for the masses and the new standard. It remains to be seen whether telecommunications companies are ready for it.

What is the biggest disappointment?

For environmental reasons, Apple has decided not to include power adapters and headphones in the new smartphones. Since many customers don’t use them, Apple can help the environment. But that also has monetary side effects: Apple can save costs and, above all, the box is getting smaller and smaller. In this way, Apple can also minimize transportation costs. For spoiled Swiss customers, anger should be limited. But one decision makes you frown: in the box is a charging cable with a Lightning connector (for the iPhone) and on the other side is the new USB-C connector. Only a few iPhone customers are likely to have a power supply with this USB interface. Either you have to buy a new power supply or the cord will collect dust in a drawer somewhere unused.

Were there any surprises?

Yes, Apple has introduced a new charging system for iPhones. Until now it was already possible to charge iPhones wirelessly. They had to be placed correctly on a loading dock. The latest iPhones have special magnets that ensure that the compatible charging dock always sticks perfectly to the mobile phone. Apple calls the new line of accessories Magsafe. Same as the magnetic charging cable on Mac computers, which was discontinued a few years ago. Apple’s official Magsafe charging cable costs 45 francs. Other accessory manufacturers may also use the standard.

When will the new iPhones arrive?

Here Apple relies on a staggered sales start. The iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro hit stores on October 23. You have to wait a little longer for the largest iPhone (12 Pro Max) and the smallest (12 Mini), until November 13. Advance sales start one week before sales start.
