A group of Catholics is suing the diocesan court against Chur’s transitional bishop, Peter Bürcher. This should listen to the believers, they demand.
(agl) The cause of the lawsuit is the dismissal of the Vicar General of Central Switzerland Martin Kopp in March after 17 years of service. In one petition, more than 3,800 people asked Bürcher to reverse the decision or to give a reason. However, there was never a conversation between the petitioners and the Apostolic Administrator Bürcher, says Zurich pastoral assistant Zeno Cavigelli in an interview on the “kath.ch” portal.
Cavigelli is the spokesperson for the group that has now filed a lawsuit with the diocesan court. In the complaint published by “kath.ch”, the believers appeal to the court to grant them the right to speak with Bürcher. Believers in the Diocese of Chur were offended after Kopp’s firing and the brief reason given multiple times that he had broken their loyalty, he said. Bürcher has repeatedly withdrawn from a conversation on the subject, either when the petition was delivered on September 18 or when making an appointment over the phone.
“I hope that the diocesan court now mediates and comes to the conclusion: Bishop Bürcher must listen to the people,” Cavigelli continued. He also hopes that the Roman Catholic Church will become a church where there is dialogue and is legally binding rather than simply arbitrariness. “The absolute rule is anachronistic and violates the modern sense of justice, also of Catholics.”
