- The 27 states of the EU decide today on a uniform framework for travel restrictions in Europe.
- A red-orange-green traffic light system creates transparency as to how much the corona pandemic is spreading in a region.
- Switzerland is not part of the system as there is no agreement with the EU on health policy.
In the future, the EU will show by country and region how widespread the corona pandemic is and what that means for travel to these areas.
Red means risk area, orange are areas with greater protection measures and green are regions that all tourists can enter without restrictions.
The traffic light map is updated daily
The color red also means that an average of 50 new infections were recorded per 100,000 inhabitants in the last 14 days, and at least four percent of corona tests performed were positive.
Until now there was no uniform definition of risk areas in the EU. But now a standardized map of Europe is created on this basis every day at the European Center for Disease Prevention.
All the EU states and the EEA countries Iceland, Norway and Liechtenstein want to commit to the new traffic light system. Switzerland, on the other hand, is still a blank spot on this map.
Switzerland is out
The EU cannot integrate data from third countries like Switzerland into the system. It does not lack good will, but a legal basis. There is no agreement between Switzerland and the EU that allows the exchange of data in the health sector.
The uniform definition of corona risk areas is, of course, a minimal compromise within the EU. Member states have not been able to agree on a uniform length of quarantine requirements, nor is there a uniform line regarding the recognition of corona tests.
Despite the traffic light system, each country can still decide for itself which entry bans it will issue.
