The author receives the award for her work on a French resistance fighter. Swiss author Dorothee Elmiger was also nominated.

The German Book Award for the best novel in German of the year goes to Anne Weber (55) for her work “Annette, an epic heroine”. The jury announced this on Monday evening in Frankfurt am Main.

Anne Weber’s original use of words is well known. Her latest work is a literary experiment on the life of a 96-year-old French woman. The book tells the story of French resistance fighter Anne Beaumanoir in verse.

The nominees for the German Book Prize 2020 were:

  • Bov Bjerg: “The Serpentine”, Claassen
  • Dorothee Elmiger: “From the Sugar Factory”, Carl Hanser
  • Thomas Hettche: “Herzfaden”, Kiepenheuer & Witsch
  • Deniz Ohde: “Scattered Light”, Suhrkamp
  • Christine Wunnicke: “The Lady with the Painted Hand.” Berenberg

Dorothee Elmiger was the only Swiss woman in the final round of the German Book Prize. She was nominated for her book “From the Sugar Factory”.

The German book award is endowed with a total of 37,500 euros: the winner receives 25,000 euros, the other authors of the shortlist each receive 2,500 euros. In total, the seven members of the jury viewed 206 titles that were published between October 2019 and September 2020.
