End the cantonal spirit: Corona asks for better agreements. The rapid rise in corona infections has alarmed politicians. That is why Federal President Simonetta Sommaruga (60) calls the cantons to Bern for Thursday.
Together with the Minister of Health, Alain Berset (48) and the Minister of Economy, Guy Parmelin (60), he will receive the heads of the cantons: the Grisons Christian Rathgeb (50), the president of the Conference of Cantonal Governments, and the main directors of health and economics, Lukas Engelberger (45, BS) and Christoph Brutschin (62, BS).
Corona is back
The task: to look together how a second blockade can be prevented, which would demand a lot from the population and would cause enormous damage to the economy. Because one thing is clear: if things continue as before, a new blockage becomes more and more likely.
The Federal Office of Public Health (BAG) reported 4,068 new corona cases for the weekend. That’s almost three times more than a week ago and five times more than two weeks ago. And: 11.4 percent of all tests over the weekend were positive, an increase too. The number of hospital admissions also increases again: yesterday they were 70.
Corona, there is no doubt, is back. Really, on a national level. The only canton that still has fewer than 60 infections per 100,000 inhabitants is Basel-Landschaft. Otherwise, the red alert applies everywhere.
Cantonal measures differ greatly
However, there are large differences in the measures taken by the cantons. Bern, not the hardest hit by the surge in numbers, has introduced a strict mask requirement and is closing club after club. St. Gallen, which has seen a dramatic increase in new infections, is waiting.
Health Minister Berset made it clear yesterday how dramatic the situation is in federal Bern. Like the BAG last week, it no longer wanted to rule out local closures. But this would have to be imposed by the cantons. These and other questions will come to the table when the federal government and canton leaders meet on Thursday.
