At the University of Bern, at the Bern University of Applied Sciences BFH and at the University of Education, it is mandatory to wear a mask in all interior rooms from next Monday. Therefore, the schools are following the impulse of the governing council of Bern.
The interiors of the universities are exempt from the obligation to wear a mask imposed by the governing council, but the three institutions have decided to make it mandatory.
The Bern University of Applied Sciences and the PH jointly announced on Friday that a proactive protection strategy was chosen because universities are required to adapt to the epidemiological situation very quickly.
The University of Bern argues similarly: The number of coronavirus infections is increasing and protecting the health of all people has the highest priority at the University of Bern, he said. Therefore, the crisis team and the university leadership have decided to introduce the mandatory use of masks.
Different implementation
In principle, the general obligation to wear a mask also applies to university teachers and employees. However, there are two exceptional cases: teachers can take courses without a mask as long as they can maintain a minimum distance of two meters from students, and employees do not have to wear the mask in the workplace if the minimum distance can be maintained. 1.5 meters apart.
In the University of Applied Sciences and the PH, the mask must be worn in the meeting areas, that is, on the way to courses or to the workplace, regardless of the minimum distance. In the fields or on the job site, however, the 1.5 meter minimum distance rule applies again.
The small difference: in the BFH and the PH, the students can do without the masks if the minimum distance is respected, in the university not.
