Basel is approaching a special autumn fair year. After the fair in the 550th anniversary year had to be canceled due to the crown, the canton communicated the next steps in August.
There will be a Ferris wheel and individual information pillars for the anniversary. The concrete plans were communicated on Friday. In addition to the promised Ferris wheel at Münsterplatz, which the city will keep until January 3, there will also be a culinary reference to the autumn fair: various traditional confectioneries will have the opportunity to mark their presence in various places.
Good mood until the next issue
However, the canton is already planning more. The Basel Autumn Fair should also be present throughout 2021. In addition to the anniversary information pillars, there will be a traditional train and a confectionery in each of the other exhibition spaces. This is planned at Barfüsserplatz from January 4 to mid-April, at Petersplatz from mid-April to mid-August, and at Messeplatz from mid-August to the autumn fair 2021. When asked about plans and measures Protection Associates, Local Marketing Sabine Horvath says: “The concept provides a worthy framework for the anniversary and does absolutely justice to the situation.”
The division into different locations will hardly generate a large number of visitors, so the health of each individual can be properly cared for. The fact that the Christmas market can take place, but not the fall fair, has by no means caused a lack of understanding, says Horvath. The fall fair is shorter and therefore has a wider audience. In addition, there would be a million visitors in seven locations, making access controls difficult.
Swiss Ferris Wheel at Munsterplatz
“We are very happy that the Christmas market can be held. This can be more easily coordinated and the protection concept can be better adhered to. Overall, there was a lot of commitment. “For the first time, the Swiss Wheel company was awarded the contract for the Ferris wheel at Münsterplatz. In recent years this has been given to a German operator.
The joy of the owner of the Swiss Wheel, Anja Bourquin, is even greater: “I think it is very nice that the canton has opted for a Swiss Ferris wheel, which shows solidarity with us operators.” The last time the 46 meter tall motorcycle was in Interlaken was for three months. There she and her husband realized how great the need is for “something beautiful in these sad times.” A comparatively large amount of gratitude had been shown to him. Also, they have never received as much tip as now.
“Being part of this anniversary means a lot to me”
Urs Wolf’s confectionery cart is located right next to the Ferris wheel. On Münsterplatz he sells traditional delicacies like gastric bread, toasted almonds and cream patties. It is the first and possibly the only event this year. “It’s a great highlight for me. Being a part of this anniversary means a lot to me. The income is almost secondary, ”says Wolf, whose family has been to the Basel autumn fair for about 35 years.
On October 24 at 12 noon, the jubilee year will be presided over by Franz Baur, who celebrated the fair.
