On the occasion of the 550th anniversary, you can discover small trade fair offers in the city center throughout the year, the canton of Basel-Stadt announced on Friday. The start is made by the Ferris wheel, which will run around the Münsterplatz in Basel from October 24 to January 3. Appearances are planned at Barfüsserplatz (from January 4 to mid-April), at Petersplatz (from mid-April to mid-August) and at Messeplatz (from mid-August to the autumn fair 2021).
Sabine Horvath, Director of External Relations and Location Marketing at Basel-Stadt, is convinced of this idea: “The Basel Autumn Fair is a cultural asset of national importance and it would be a great failure not to properly honor the anniversary.”
Anniversary activities will be launched selectively at Münsterplatz
In addition to the Ferris wheel, more fair experiences are planned at Barfüsserplatz, Petersplatz and Messeplatz. These attractions are linked to information for the population about the history, background and traditions of the Basel Autumn Fair. A traditional confectionery will also “create a culinary reference for the fall fair,” he continues.
Despite the cancellation of this year’s Basel Autumn Fair, Franz Baur will celebrate the anniversary year on October 24, 2020 from 12 noon to 12:15. However, due to the Crown, this year guests are not allowed to go up to the tower room. Due to the pandemic situation, the canton also has to renounce the public event at Martinskirchplatz.
