Cinemas in crisis – James Bond missing: US cinema chains closed, Swiss fight – News

It’s about this: The big US cinema chains Cineworld and Regal are closing several hundred theaters in the US and Britain, at least temporarily. The companies announced that it was a consequence of the crown crisis. In fact, many cinemas lack income, because the premieres of blockbusters like “Batman” or the new movie with James Bond are being delayed more and more.

The second largest chain of cinemas closes

Earlier in the week, the world’s second-largest theater chain, Cineworld, announced that it would temporarily close all movie theaters in the United States and Britain. You lose more money when you’re open without being able to show blockbusters than when you close, the Cineworld boss said. By contrast, the world’s largest theater chain, AMC, keeps its houses open.

Bond is also missing in this country: In Switzerland, too, the big cinema chains are fighting back, for the same reasons as US cinemas. “Above all, everyone was betting on the new Bond,” says SRF film editor Michael Sennhauser. Cinemas lack a mass audience. Therefore, movie theaters should be used with many small films. “That means a lot more work for theaters,” says Sennhauser. This concept does not work for the big chains of cinemas in the United States.

Europe Movies: In Switzerland, people are more used to the fact that cinemas offer many different films, not just blockbusters. “But cinemas have problems in Switzerland too,” says Sennhauser. In this case too, many cinemas are often misused and dependent on American blockbusters. Theaters are currently focusing on larger European films, which at least work to some degree.

Advantage for smaller cinemas: Neighboring countries function in a similar way to Switzerland, Sennhauser says. “Those countries where the big cinema chains dominate the market tend to have problems.” Britain is affected by this. In addition to the large cinema chains, there are at least many municipal cinemas that program similarly to Swiss cinemas. But here, too, it applies: “That leads to more effort and ultimately less profit.”
