A lot of red and a little bit of orange: this is the coronavirus traffic light in your canton – Switzerland

The virus is spreading. On Friday, the federal government reported 1,487 infections. That’s more than there has been since the height of the crisis. At the same time, the experts are appeasing. Higher contagion rates also have to do with better traceability. The number of unreported cases is lower. How dramatic is the situation really?

To observe and compare the situation of the crown in the cantons, a traffic light scheme was circulated among the canton’s doctors in the summer. Two factors determine whether the traffic light is green, yellow, orange or red: the number of corona patients per 100,000 inhabitants and the increase in infections compared to the previous week.

If the number of infections increases by up to 10 percent compared to the previous week, the traffic light only turns red when there are 75 infections per 100,000 inhabitants. If it exceeds 20 percent, the individual canton turns red with 25 cases per 100,000 Zone inhabitants.

The CH Media editorial team performed the calculation for the 26 cantons with the latest Corona issues. The result: the traffic light is red in 23 of the 26 cantons, only orange in the cantons of Glarus, Solothurn and Zurich. None of the cantons is in the yellow or even green zone.

In all cantons except Zurich, the increase in infections exceeds 20 percent compared to the previous week. In all cantons except Glarus and Solothurn, more than 24 people were infected per 100,000 inhabitants.

Now the elderly are also re-infected

The president of the Conference of Health Directors and the Director of Health of Basel, Lukas Engelberger, says: “We are in a critical phase”. Infections increased dramatically, and this in all cantons. And add:

Engelberger cannot identify a clear source of the disease. Many factors come together. Private parties, for example, but also travelers who got infected. However, above all, it is the behavior of the individual.

Engelberger also advises large-scale private parties.

Does the federal government have to take over?

The Corona concept with the traffic light system comes from the Canton of Zug and served the canton doctors as a basis for developing their own concepts. Depending on the level of scaling and color, foresee various measures. In the context of the traffic light system, it can also be understood why this week Bern and Zug introduced the requirement for masks in shops and in closed clubs and dance halls in Ticino. They leaned toward red.

The traffic light concept states that at the red level, the federal government should once again have more weight. The concept says that cooperation must go beyond the cantons. Now that almost all cantons are in the red, does the federal government have to take over?

Health Minister Alain Berset said no this week. Health director Engelberger also rejects it. “The cantons have the situation under control. The federal government couldn’t do better, ”he says. It also puts the concept of a traffic light into perspective as partially outdated. He says:

Today one is further away. That is why the scheme should not be interpreted too strictly, the numbers should not be seen at all.

According to Engelberger, the cantons also work closely with the FOPH. The federal government plays a central role, especially in the area of information.

The FOPH stepped up communication on Friday. The sign asking to wash hands, keep your distance and wear a mask has been given a new color. It now glows orange instead of blue before. Looking at the Corona traffic light, you could tell: red wouldn’t have been bad either.
