Across Switzerland, cable cars generate around 75 percent of their annual turnover in winter. In several destinations it is even higher than 90 percent. Hans Wicki (56), president of Seilbahnen Schweiz, expects a more or less lucrative winter despite Corona: “From today’s perspective, the winter season will take place. We have to learn to live with the virus, and we can! “
The requirements of the protection concept that have been in force since the summer and that have been coordinated with public transport remain in force (distances, hygiene). Wearing a mask is still mandatory in closed cable car cabins. One thing is clear: there are no mask requirements for the ski lifts and chair lifts.
Protected by ski goggles and helmet
On the one hand, the protective regimen with oral and nasal protection and hygiene measures have proven effective. On the other hand, mountain train travelers are better protected in winter with gloves, glasses and helmets than in summer. In addition, there is now on the market a comfortable and winter resistant mouth and nose protection variant with the neck tubes.
However, Seilbahnen Schweiz does not sell protection products for the mouth and nose; guests themselves are responsible for facial protection, Wicki stressed.
Après-Ski mit Mass
The cable cars are strongly oriented towards public transport protection measures. “Therefore, limiting the transport capacity of cable cars is not a problem, since there is no space limitation in public transport,” explains Wicki.
It is clear to everyone that resorts should avoid uncontrollable crowds in their own interest. “Currently we do not live in times of extravagant après-ski,” said the SBS president at the general assembly in Seilbahnen Schweiz.
