Joshua Cheptegei over 10,000 m in men and Letesenbet Gidey over 5,000 m in women have better times in Valencia.
World champion Joshua Cheptegei from Uganda broke the 15-year world record in the 10,000m in Valencia. The 24-year-old crossed the finish line after 26: 11.02 minutes and thus remained well below the old record of three-time Olympic track winner Kenenisa Bekele (Ethiopia / 26: 17.53) from 2005.
For Cheptegei it is already the third world record this year. He had first set the best time in the 5km road race (12:51) in February, on August 14 he set the world record for over 5000m in 12: 35.36 minutes.
Also Gidey with a record
A few minutes before Cheptegei, Ethiopia’s Letesenbet Gidey broke the world record of over 5000m in women. The 22-year-old ran a time of 14: 06.62 minutes and was more than 4 seconds faster than her compatriot Tirunesh Dibaba (14: 11.15 minutes) in 2008.
Gidey, a five-time gold medalist at the World Cross Country Championships, won silver over 10,000m at the World Championships in Athletics in Doha last year.
“The name is an omen” in Valencia
The evening in Valencia with the two endurance races of more than 5000 and 10’000 m was called “Valencia World Record Day”. In both races, the African star athletes lived up to the event’s ambitious name.
