Since the heated television debate on September 29 between US presidential candidates Donald Trump (74) and Joe Biden (77), a large audience suddenly became acquainted with the far-right Proud Boys (Proud Boys).
Moderator Chris Wallace asked Trump if he would be willing to condemn right-wing groups that spread his ideas. Then Trump addressed the Proud Boys explicitly: “Stand back and stand by,” which is German for “hold back and be ready.”
A happy day for the group: After being mentioned by Trump, they shared their enthusiasm on social media, changed their logo and celebrated. Gay community activists have now found a simple means of hiding hateful messages: hijacking the Twitter hashtag #ProudBoys and flooding the short message service with photos of gay couples; many kiss in the photos.
For some time, the hashtag was trending around the world, and there was no longer any sign of the martial weapons fools.
Celebrities also support this campaign, including George Takei, who became famous with the Star Trek series “Raumschiff Enterprise.”
He wrote in a tweet: “The Proud Boys would definitely be upset if gay men took pictures of themselves kissing or doing other really gay things and then tagged them #ProudBoys.” Many Twitter users were pleased to comply with the request – a few hundred thousand such tweets have already been posted with #ProudBoys.
