Winter sports enthusiasts who do not adhere to the concept of safety should fear severe penalties. “We are not afraid of blocking guest entrances if they do not comply,” says Franz Julen. “Or we can stop people who refuse to wear a mask.”
Waiting for the federal rules

The use of masks on the slopes depends on the federal government and the canton of Valais. Its specifications for winter sports are not yet known. In Zermatt, people are considering taking additional precautionary measures.
Après-ski remains uncertain
It is not yet clear what après-ski will be this season. The decision and communication in this regard rests with the federal government and the cantons. «Of course, the après-ski is part of the experience. But for our destiny it is of secondary importance, ”says health center director Daniel Luggen.
Zermatt has introduced new cancellation conditions so that you can book worry-free. In the case of Covid or official orders, tickets already reserved will be converted into credit. This is valid for three years.
Zermatt Unplugged will fit
After Zermatt Unplugged was canceled last year, planning is cautious for next year. “Zermatt Unplugged will also take place in 2021. But we can’t do it right away with the current specifications,” says Rolf Furrer, managing director of Zermatt Unplugged.
The festival will now take place on two weekends. Small concerts with a maximum of 100 people take place in Zermatt. There will also be small disconnected concerts in summer.
Swiss book on short notice
Although Zermatt saw an 80 percent increase in Swiss guests, the mountainous region expects a quarter fewer guests. “We saw in the summer that the Swiss couldn’t make up for the lack of foreigners,” Luggen said.
And yet: “Despite the caution, we are aware: a corona outbreak can also occur in the village at the foot of the Matterhorn,” he says. A local working group has been prepared for these cases.
