Olympic champion Eliud Kipchoge had to admit defeat for the first time in 7 years and finished 8th in the London Marathon.
Eliud Kipchoge had to start a good 4 kilometers from the finish in London and thus suffered his second defeat in a marathon race completely unexpectedly. For the first time, the world record holder was defeated in 2013 in Berlin by his Kenyan compatriot Wilson Kipsang.
In the British capital, Kipchoge finished eighth, 1:08 minutes behind. In the battle for victory, Ethiopia’s Shura Kitata prevailed in the final sprint after 2: 05.41 hours with a one-second lead over Vincent Kipchumba / KEN. Third place went to Sisay Lemma / ETH.
Kosgei wins again
In the women’s category, Brigid Kosgei repeated her victory from the previous year. The Kenyan world record holder celebrated a top victory in 2: 18.58 hours. The advantage over Sara Hall of the United States was more than 3 minutes. Third was Kosgei’s compatriot Ruth Chepngetich.
Due to the corona pandemic, amateur runners were not allowed in the London Marathon. The 42,195 km were completed without a spectator on a closed circuit through St. James’s Park at Buckingham Palace.
Hug third, Schär second
In the wheelchair athlete race, Marcel Hug finished third. Thurgauer lost just 4 seconds in 1: 36.08 hours to winner Brent Lakatos of Canada. Britain’s David Weir came in second. Hug’s compatriot, Hienz Frei, came in eighth.
In the women’s category, Manuela Schär came in second with a time of 1: 41.29 hours, the Lucerne woman lost 1:22 minutes to top winner Nikita Den Boer from the Netherlands.
