With 6 points and a goal difference of 7: 0, Lugano had a more than successful start to the season. Goalkeeper Niklas Schlegel played an important role in this.
A total of 62 shots were fired on the door at the HC Lugano homes on Thursday and Friday. None of them found their way past Niklas Schlegel. The 26-year-old radiated great confidence against his former club ZSC Lions (4: 0) as well as Ambri (3: 0) and thus laid the foundation for the very promising start to the season for the “Bianconeri”.
SCB’s dark chapter forgotten?
Schlegel seems to feel more and more at home in Ticino. A year ago, there was still nothing to suggest an imminent engagement with Lugano. We remember: after Leonardo Genoni left Bern in the direction of Zug, Schlegel was supposed to follow in the great footsteps of the national team goalkeeper at SCB. But this completely failed for the man from Zurich.
Schlegel could not cope with the pressure in Bern, his performance did not convince the SCB management. On the contrary: Berna signed Tomi Karhunen, Schlegel no longer had a place at “Mutzen”. In December, mid-season, he moved to Lugano. A stroke of luck, both for Schlegel and for his new club. At least that’s how it seems now.
Schlegel has won the race for No. 1
This is also shown by the statistics. Schlegel played 9 games for the HCL last season before the championship had to be canceled due to the crown situation. Catch quota: 93.1 percent. Unmatched by his time in Bern, where he was worth 89.7 percent in 16 games.
And now the 100% fee for the start of the new season. It is still too early to draw definitive conclusions about the strengths of Schlegel and Lugano. But the beginning was promising.
Which, however, already seems certain: Schlegel has won the race for No. 1 in Luganesi’s goal against Sandro Zurkirchen (at least for the moment). And as long as Schlegel keeps his area clean, there is hardly any reason for coach Serge Pelletier to change anything at the goalkeeper position.
