With the loss to CSKA Sofia, FC Basel not only has more European Cup nights, but also several million revenue. Income that would have been urgently needed in the current situation around Corona.
Transfers as an alternative?
Although these European millions were not budgeted, according to FCB CEO Roland Heri, the leverage must now be applied financially elsewhere. “UEFA bonuses are an essential part of the revenue that can be raised and, in that sense, they are also part of our business model. Unfortunately, we didn’t make it this year. Now we have to look around in other ways to find out how we can cover this, ”says Heri.
Other ways? Fact: The only source of income in Swiss football is currently transfer income. At the moment, you will not win anything with the spectators of Basel. There is only one option left. So Rotblau is obliged to sell his players because they missed the Europa League? The CEO of the FCB does not categorically rule it out: “The transfer market always plays an important role. But there is no talk of a sale. We are not a department store. We will not deliver any player on interesting terms, ”Heri said. So far, there is only one semi-concrete offer for one player at the Basel table.
No ticket revenue
FC Basel would not go out of their way to sell players now. “We want to keep the team together like this”, clarifies the CEO of FCB. On the other hand, when it comes to people coming in, the window closes faster and faster under the given circumstances, if it hasn’t closed yet. Red-Blue’s team is currently short on individual positions due to injuries. According to coach Ciriaco Sforza, he does not want to risk a quick shot: “We want to analyze the squad internally and then look ahead.”
An additional factor is the lack of income from viewers. More than 1,000 fans will be able to re-enter the stadium from Sunday. All holders of an annual pass, for which it has already been paid. So there is no more business for red-blue. “The current task is to experience our protection concept live on Sunday. That we can prove, also to ourselves, that we are up to the task. The monetary aspects of all this are secondary. First of all, we want to do everything we can to make sure everyone can play happy and go home healthy, ”says Heri.
Do the players want to go?
According to the FCB management, one thing is clear: the club’s liquidity is guaranteed until after the New Year. Consequently, Rotblau is not required to sell any players until winter break to make up for the lack of bonuses from Europe. However, it is quite possible that individual players will actively seek a transfer with the certainty that they will not be allowed to play a European campaign with FCB.
