The news hit like the proverbial bombshell on Friday morning: US President Donald Trump and his wife Melania are infected with the corona virus. That sounds like a classic case of the irony of fate: A head of state who has played down and downplayed the virus and its consequences over and over again is now sick.
This is also the tenor of many reactions to the news. There is talk of “karma” and “your own fault!” it also resonates often.
However, in addition to barely concealed joy and good wishes for recovery, there is a third type of reaction: doubt. Skeptical observers assume that Trump could only have faked his illness, for tactical reasons.
Sounds crazy? Okay, it gets crazier. In fact, an American Twitter user predicted exactly that on September 18. “Trump’s surprise in October will be the announcement of ‘his infection,'” he wrote. “False, but quite dramatic.” This twist will make his challenger Joe Biden uninteresting, the story will only revolve around Trump’s illness.
Dunja Hayali and Jan Böhmermann doubt Trump’s illness
Given current events, the tweet is being shared and discussed a lot. ZDF host Dunja Hayali saw it, and at least she doesn’t want to rule anything out.
His fellow moderator Jan Böhmermann also seems to have his doubts about Trump’s Covid disease. “Fake news,” he tweeted, adding a little later: “Trump is solely responsible for Trump’s lack of confidence.”
And political scientist Natascha Strobl also has doubts about Trump’s presentation, as she explains in a detailed analysis thread (in which, however, she also makes it clear that there are also points that speak against a staging).
That speaks clearly against the theory
But there are also many commentators who contradict this theory. The political scientist Carlo Masala, for example, claims that he shares caution and skepticism, but some exceeded the target.
In addition to this probability calculation, Trump was at many mass events without a safety distance and a mask, he speaks out against staging: His doctor officially confirmed the diagnosis. A doctor, especially one of such high rank, would put himself at a very high professional risk of lying about such an important matter, and there would be no certainty that the lie would not be exposed. Or the other way around: this is very likely to be exposed.
Consequently, many users speak of a conspiracy myth.
The downside is: you trust it will
Another user sums up the dilemma of the whole thing well: Even people who have absolutely nothing to do with conspiracy ideologies have no difficulty in imagining that the sitting US president is lying. Simply because he has been convicted of lies many times.
