A third person observed the incident. In recent days, unknown persons had blown up two ATMs in the canton of Bern.
At around 3:30 am, strangers tried to open the ATM at a gas station, a spokeswoman for Aargau canton police said at the request of the Keystone-SDA news agency. “We assume they wanted to blow up the ATM.”
According to the police, no one was injured. The two masked strangers were observed by a third person. This alerted the authorities. The strangers fled in a car in the direction of Lucerne, as the third person told police. This started an investigation and sought witnesses.
The Zurich Forensic Institute was called in to obtain evidence at the separate ATMs of the Aargauische Kantonalbank. To recover the suspected explosive device, the police temporarily closed a street.
Already two attempts in the last days
The incidents in the canton of Bern occurred on Monday evening in Utzenstorf and on Wednesday evening in Büren an der Aare. The attack in Utzenstorf was successful, the unknown perpetrators escaped on a scooter with cash for an unknown amount.
In Büren, the attempt to blow up the machine on the outer wall of the UBS branch failed. According to the police, the perpetrators were probably disturbed, so they left. Major property damage was done to the building. Also in this case, the police assume that the perpetrators escaped on a scooter. If there is a connection to the Utzenstorf case it is open.
