Corona once again has Madrid firmly controlled. But not everyone agrees with the central government’s shutdown plans.
The Spanish central government today, against the will of the regional government, ordered the continued closure of the Corona Madrid hotspot. So far, only individual districts have been affected. A mandatory order from the Minister of Health, Salvador Illa, was published in the Official Gazette.
The regional government reluctantly announced that it would be forced to implement the blockade for the time being. At the same time, however, he wants to appeal to the courts because he considers the measure to be illegal. That’s what the head of the regional government, Isabel Díaz Ayuso, said. At first it was said that the measure would not be implemented by the regional government.
According to the corona numbers currently available, the order also affects nine other cities near the capital in addition to Madrid.
The government sets uniform criteria
According to the order, freedom of movement and social contacts must be restricted if the number of new infections in a city exceeds 500 per 100,000 inhabitants in 14 days, at least ten percent of all corona tests are positive and more than 35 percent of intensive care beds are occupied by corona patients. . The regulation should only apply to cities with at least 100,000 inhabitants.
If these criteria are met, people can no longer leave the cities. They are also advised not to move more than necessary within the city, excluding commuting to work. Stores close at 10 pm, restaurants and bookmakers at 11 pm You can only meet a maximum of six people, as explained by freelance journalist Hans Kellner in Madrid.
There is no unanimity of the regions
The Health Minister, Illa, had said the night before that the regulation had been adopted by a large majority at the meeting of the Interterritorial Health Council. His announcement came as a surprise, as it had previously been said that all 17 regions would have to agree to the adoption.
In addition to Madrid, Catalonia, Galicia and Andalusia also voted against the central government’s plans. Murcia was also against it, but instead of voting no, he accidentally abstained from voting.
Madrid already partially cordoned off
The conservative regional president of Madrid, Isabel Díaz Ayuso, does not want to cordon off the city due to the consequences for the economy. To date, 45 areas of Madrid have been partially cordoned off. According to the journalist Kellner, the poorest areas of the city, where many workers and migrants live, are particularly affected, increasing discontent with the regional government. Because the most affluent areas of the city are not cordoned off.
Because right now?
The high number of infections has made Madrid a focus of the pandemic in Western Europe. According to figures from Wednesday, in 14 days there were 735 new infections per 100,000 inhabitants.
One fifth of all corona tests in Madrid are positive, and more than 40 percent of beds in intensive care units are occupied by corona patients. That affects the surrounding regions, as Kellner says. The numbers are already increasing in Castilla-La Mancha and León because many commute to work in Madrid.
Obviously, the situation has become unbearable. But it is actually too late.
According to Kellner, this trend has been evident since July, so one rightly wonders why the decision was made now and not in August. “Obviously, the situation has now become unbearable. But it’s really too late, ”says Kellner.
