Due to a “sexist” dress code in some secondary and middle schools, young people in Geneva climb the barricades. Dozens of students protested in front of Pinchat College on Wednesday. They demand that the “degrading” dress code be lifted.

The so-called “shirt of shame” (T-shirt de la honte) provokes a particularly great anger among young people. This oversized shirt, which falls to the knees, bears the words “I am dressed appropriately.” It should be worn by students who have come to school wearing clothing deemed inappropriate.

Clothing that is not belly or shoulder, jupes or shorts where the thighs are visible or those with offensive or obscene messages are considered inappropriate. According to the students, the dress code is sexist. Girls are much more affected by this measure than boys, they complain. Regulations indicated that girls’ clothing could be controlled.

“Dangerous for young people”

The students have sent a letter of protest to the Geneva Department of Education. In it they demand that the Director of Education Anne Emery-Torracinta (sp.) Force guidance schools to abandon this “humiliating” practice, which she considers “extreme and dangerous for the healthy psychological development of young people.”

They also demand that the dress code be reviewed in schools. This will be done in cooperation “with feminist and educational associations.” In addition, the students demand a public apology from the education department “for this serious and reprehensible mistake.”
