After the World Economic Forum (WEF), the lucrative Spengler Cup was now also canceled due to Corona during New Years week in Davos. It was not a surprise. However, it is a further setback for catering and hotel operations in the famous Grisons ski resort.
Especially those who are closely related to the events now have to fight. “Besides the WEF, the cancellation of the Spengler Cup is the second hammer,” says Hotel Grischa director Cyrill Ackermann (46), to VIEW. “The Canadian team and entourage always live with us. That’s 120 people with full board. “The 4-star hotel is located in the center of Davos Platz.
Now we have to do plan B
Now it is important to compensate for this loss with other guests. About a third of the hotel would be occupied from December 21 to January 2. “Now we are trying to attract new guests and especially families with lucrative packages and offers,” says Ackermann. “But of course that does not replace the long-term planned full pension of the Cup.”
The 94th Spengler Cup would have been held from December 26 to 31. The World Economic Forum should have taken place in January 2021.
Cancellation was predictable
Many already expected the Spengler Cup to be canceled. “No fan tent, no ice dome, half empty stadium, mask requirement and no space to stand, it has nothing to do with a hockey festival, as we are used to. Even with the best protection concept, this would not have been possible, ”says Marc Gianola, president of the Spengler Cup and legend of the HCD.
Thanks to solid earnings in recent years, hotels, restaurants, and bars will likely survive without the two events. “The situation does not threaten the very existence of the company,” says Ackermann. “But the two events already account for about 10 to 12 percent of sales,” he says.
The predictability is gone
The good thing about the events in Davos: They were tightly scheduled and ensured guaranteed revenue year after year. “Corona as a whole is now taking long-term planning away from us,” the operator of the Hard Rock Hotel in Davos tells BLICK. “We will fill the beds this winter, but reservations come much more spontaneously and on short notice than before Corona.”
Others also get something positive from the whole debacle. “There is also something good in rejections,” says Giovanni Croce (41) from the DaElio restaurant, which is also in the center of Davos. “But we have less stress.”
