- Thousands of people took to the streets in the Spanish region of Catalonia on Monday night.
- They protested against the removal of their prime minister Quim Torra by the Spanish judiciary.
- According to media reports, up to 1,000 people gathered in Barcelona and marched in front of the regional parliament.
Some protesters threw firecrackers, garbage bags, rocks and pig heads at police officers. They also set fire to waste containers. According to the information, the spontaneous demonstration dissolved around 11 pm
The Spanish judiciary had previously canceled Torra for disobedience. The Spanish Supreme Court confirmed a corresponding ruling of the Superior Regional Court of Catalonia last December in Madrid, according to which the Catalan head of government cannot hold public office for a year and a half.
The reason: before the Spanish parliamentary elections on April 28 of last year, the 57-year-old man refused to remove the symbols of independence from the seat of his government in Barcelona and other public buildings, despite the fact that the electoral authority I had ordered it.
Fear of climbing
Observers fear that Torras’ impeachment amid the Crown crisis and three years after the illegal independence referendum on October 1, 2017, will lead to a dangerous new escalation of the Catalonia conflict. Several separatist parties and organizations called protests.
