More for the Spengler Cup: just two home games instead of a pompous tournament
For the first time since 1956, the Spengler Cup is not held. As a “consolation prize” there are two championship games on December 28 against Ambri and on December 30 against Zug. Now is the time to cancel the participation of the national team in the Deutschland Cup.
The long-awaited cancellation is officially confirmed. The 2020 Spengler Cup does not take place. Willi Vögtlin has given HC Davos two home games the week before: on December 28, Ambri, who would have participated in the Spengler Cup, will play in Davos, on December 30 he will play Zug. “The clubs have agreed to postpone these games until the break of the Spengler Cup,” confirms the head of the calendar.
What does the cancellation mean for HC Davos? HCD does not carry insurance in this case. Only one cancellation is assured due to weather conditions. That means a loss of net income of around three million francs. Which roughly corresponds to the amount that Peter Buser has already paid for the stadium sponsorship and now wants to get back.
HCD President Gaudenz Domenig may not confirm this. But don’t deny it either. By the way, there is currently no radio silence between the parties on this matter.
Bankruptcy is not a problem
Domenig says that HCD needs federal funding in one form or another to financially survive this season. Assumes financial assistance amounts to 25 percent of total sales in the amount of CHF 26 million. “We will definitely apply for these loans to ensure our liquidity.”
He is concerned that it is not even possible to play with the two-thirds seat occupancy throughout the season: “We calculated all the scenarios.” The HCD will not go bankrupt. “But we’re probably not the only ones who couldn’t survive a second season with these restrictions,” Domenig said.
Nati would have to go to Krefeld
Negotiations with the sponsors of the Spengler Cup now begin. How much do you transfer anyway? Or will the contracts just be extended for a year? Gaudenz Domenig says that the relevant negotiations have not yet taken place. “But in the first discussions we felt a lot of understanding for our situation.” Tickets that have already been purchased will carry over to the next tournament (2021).
If the Spengler Cup is canceled, it is time to cancel participation in another tournament. In this situation, it cannot be that our national team will participate in the Deutschland Cup from 5 to 8 November in Krefeld. It would be irresponsible to expose our best players to the risk of infection on this insignificant occasion abroad.
