FDP member Mathias Gabathuler missed the St. Gallen city council election by just 562 votes. In the fight for the city council, Gabathuler came second behind Maria Pappa in the first round, now Gabathuler confirms: he is back in the second round.
(dwa / register) The starting position after the first St. Gallen city council election is exciting. The SP’s wife, Maria Pappa, got 9,116 votes: she got 1,679 more votes than Mathias Gabathuler of the FDP, while Markus Buschor, who was not part of the party, came in third:
Now, after Pappa, FDP man Mathias Gabathuler is also showing his colors: confirming that he is back in the second vote. Independent Markus Buschor’s decision on whether to stay in the city hall race or to retire is still pending.
Elections to the city council are missing
In order for Mathias Gabathuler to be city president, he must also be elected city councilor. The FDP candidate missed this election by 562 votes in the first ballot:
SVP’s Karin Winter-Dubs announced Monday that she would no longer run on the second ballot. It is not yet clear whether Trudy Cozzio (CVP) and Markus Müller (independent) will return to the second vote or if they will withdraw.
FDP emphasizes your claim clearly
For Mathias Gabathuler, it is clear from his performance in the first vote “it is clear that I want to run for the city council and city council elections in the second vote”, as can be cited in a statement from the FDP. At the press conference on Tuesday morning, he said that despite his good result, he first had to sleep on the subject for one night, especially since he also had to run a school, which was not entirely without it in times of Crown. But his family is completely behind him, Gabathuler said. Mathias Gabathuler described the finance and home affairs department as the preferred department, especially since it is affiliated with the city council.
The party leadership, for its part, unanimously nominated the rector of the Brühl canton school for the second ballot on Monday evening. The city party chairman Oskar Seger:
“We discussed the initial situation in great detail. The end was really clear to everyone: we see Mathias Gabathuler as our president and city councilor. “
The FDP clearly claimed the seat of resigning city president Thomas Scheitlin for itself, as the statement continues. “We are the second strongest political force in the city of St. Gallen. It is logical that we represent the bourgeois side in the city hall, otherwise green on the left, ”says Oskar Seger.
The party is also pleased that the SVP has decided not to run again in the second vote in favor of Gabathuler and the FDP. For the SVP, Gabathuler is clearly the most promising candidate to keep the last seat of the city council and the city council in bourgeois hands. What CVP will do now remains to be seen, so Oskar Seger continues: “We would be happy if they supported us as well.”
Donat Kuratli, SVP City Party Chairman and City MP, explains:
“The SVP keeps its word and the joint declaration of intent of the SVP, CVP and FDP before the first vote.”
