Up to 500,000 sharks have to die for the world’s population to receive the corona vaccine. This is what the environmental protection organization Shark Allies claims. Sharks have something that can make the vaccine more effective for humans.
Squalene is the name of the substance obtained from shark liver. It acts as an active booster in vaccines and was already used in Germany in the substance to contain the swine flu pandemic in 2009. It should now also be used in the Covid-19 vaccine.
Concern for the shark population in the vaccine race
Shark Allies believes that if everyone received a dose of the corona vaccine, around 250,000 sharks would have to be killed. If two doses are needed to immunize the world’s population, half a million sharks would have to die. Researchers assume the latter will be the case.
Stefanie Brendl, founder of the environmental protection organization, says: “It will never be sustainable to obtain something from a wild animal, especially if it is a first-class predator that does not reproduce in large numbers.”
Vegetable alternative instead of shark death
Also, it is unclear how long this pandemic will last and how many waves there will be. “If we continue to use shark liver, the number of sharks killed by the vaccine will be really high, year after year after year.”
The shark population would weaken. The organization advocates increasingly seeking a sustainable solution. She wants vaccine manufacturers to use non-animal squalene, as the substance can also be produced from plants. (euc)
