- St. Gallen wins 1-0 in Vaduz thanks to a late goal.
- André Ribeiro scored the decisive goal in the 83rd minute.
- Vaduz forward Manuel Sutter only hits the crossbar in the opening phase.
- In the other games, Lucerne and Lausanne were split 2-2, while Basel lost at Servette.
It would have been the dream start of the match against FC St. Gallen for the home team from Vaduz. At 12 minutes, a cross landed on Tunahan Cicek, who threw a spitzel at Manuel Sutter. The forward only hit the top of the bar at close range. However, the newcomer did not let the missed opportunity knock him down and above all, he was defensively compact.
Harmless St. Galler
The St. Gallen team, on the other hand, found it extremely difficult in the early stages. Nothing worked in the game. So it was not surprising that the runner-up’s first opportunity came after a standard situation: Betim Fazliji narrowly missed after a free kick by Jordi Quintilla (minute 19).
Controversial scene
In the 27th minute, St. Gallen called for a penalty. Denis Simani dropped St. Gallen’s Lukas Görtler in the penalty area. Referee Lukas Fähndrich’s whistle went silent and the VAR did not intervene either, a controversial decision in favor of Vaduz. Otherwise the first half was meager. St. Gallen had more ball possession, but couldn’t do much with it – the 0-0 at halftime was the logical consequence.
St. Gallen Presses – Vaduz stalks
Even after the change of sides, nothing changed in the landscape on the field: St. Gallen was decisive for the game, but not dangerous. The only scene worthy of note was a long-range shot from Victor Ruiz in the 65th minute, which Vaduz goalkeeper Benjamin Büchel was miraculously able to deflect.
This opportunity was something of an initial spark for the St. Gallen team to add a shovel, because Peter Zeidler’s team was now overwhelmingly superior and restricted Vaduz’s team, which in turn concentrated on quick counterattacks. Cicek was unable to complete one of these in the 74th minute as St. Gallen goalkeeper Lawrence Ati Zigi reacted brilliantly.
Ribeiro decides the game
And so, in the end, the pendulum fell to the side of the favorite. In the 83rd minute, Vaduz didn’t get the ball out of his own penalty area and André Ribeiro pushed the ball over the line as he fell. Due to the proportion of the game and the opportunities, this leadership and the associated victory for St. Gallen was ultimately not undeserved. Also because Jordi Quintilla missed a foul penalty in injury time.
For the runner-up, it was the second complete success after the initial victory against Sion. After the second match days, St. Gallen is the only team with 6 points. Vaduz, for his part, suffered his first defeat of the season after a surprising draw in Basel.
