Greens and Green Liberals win four seats and achieve parliamentary strength. The established parties have to surrender.

  • The Schaffhausen electorate has elected its 60-member parliament.
  • As in the governing council elections, the Greens and Liberal Greens were able to win. In the Greens, the mother’s party wins one seat, the young Greens get 2 seats.
  • The LPG wins an additional seat. Both parties now have parliamentary groups with five seats each.
  • Established parties are among the losers. The SP not only loses its own seat, but also that of the Juso, which no longer works. The FDP also loses its own seat and one of the young liberals. The SVP loses a seat.

Little wonder among the Greens

The weather tipped the balance, despite Corona, believes the president of the Greens, Roland Müller, and is looking for explanations. “That also surprises me,” he admits. I was nervous because they didn’t know what was going on. “Corona raises fears, but obviously we have answers.” Voters reacted accordingly.

Green is growing, in all districts

Green Liberals and Greens are growing in all constituencies. The Greens in the Neuhausen constituency did this impressively. There, together with the young Greens, they obtained 13 percent of the votes, more than double the number in the 2016 cantonal elections. In Stein am Rhein, the GLP immediately obtained 11 percent of the votes. Even at SVP strongholds like Klettgau, the Greens and GLP were able to win between three and four percent.

SVP is still the strongest party: SP is disappointed

With 20 seats, the SVP remains the party with the largest number of voters, while the green parties with ten seats are very close to the SP, which now has twelve seats. That’s disappointing, says SP president Daniel Meyer, because SP is also a climate party. “That is an important point, a very important issue, also for us.” By not having “green” in your name, you have a downside. The FDP is also disappointed and now has eight seats, followed by the AL with four seats. With all these postponements, the parliament of the canton of Schaffhausen is now even more balanced than before.
