25 occupants were killed in the crash of an Antonov AN-26 military plane in eastern Ukraine. Two people survived the Chuhujiw disaster in the Kharkiv region with very serious injuries. The civil defense announced in Kiev on Friday evening.
Consequently, the two occupants of the Antonov were saved with a jump as the machine approached to land and then crashed. The governor of the area, Alexei Kutschera, said during a visit to the scene that one of the aircraft’s engines had failed before the accident. The exact cause of the accident was initially unclear. Much of Ukraine’s military equipment, which suffers from chronic dampness, is outdated.
According to authorities, there were 27 people aboard the Antonov, mostly young recruits from the University of the Air Force. They had completed a training flight and were back. At first there were 28 interns, but probably one of the trainees did not show up for the exercise.
Shipwreck on fire, widely scattered debris
The EU’s foreign representative, Josep Borrell, reacted with consternation to the news from Ukraine, which he himself had visited for the first time this week. He expressed his condolences to the families of the victims and to Ukrainian President Volodomyr Zelenskyi on the short message service Twitter. Zelenskyi wants to visit the crash site this Saturday.
Immediately after the accident, a sinister could be seen burning in the dark in the images of social networks. A little later videos of the cleared debris appeared, which was widely scattered in an uninhabited area with trees.
A total of seven crew members and 20 college students were on board, he said. Two inmates were seriously injured. Authorities had previously increased the number of deaths over and over again overnight.
Accident in crisis zone
The region is about 40 kilometers from the Russian border in crisis-ravaged eastern Ukraine, but not in the war zone there. This is another great blow to the country’s military. The armed forces are fighting against pro-Russian separatists in the crisis region, some 250 meters from the crash site. In the affected parts of the Lugansk and Donetsk regions, people are repeatedly killed in skirmishes.
According to United Nations estimates, there have been more than 13,000 deaths in war since 2014. Germany and France mediate the bloody conflict. However, attempts to find a peaceful solution to the crisis have again stalled. Ukraine and Russian-backed separatists accuse each other of doing too little to implement a peace plan. (SDA)
