Rise Up for Change activists called a climate strike. Earlier in the week they occupied the Bundesplatz for 48 hours before the police evacuated on Wednesday night.
The protesters gathered at Helvetiaplatz on Friday afternoon and marched through the city center to Waisenhausplatz, chanting and chanting slogans. The police tolerated the unauthorized demonstration, but did not allow them to pass to the Bundesplatz and blocked the entrances with a water cannon, among other things.
The demonstration ended with speeches at the Waisenhausplatz. Several speakers noted the urgency for action and presented the various demands of the climate movement. After that, a “climate arena” with the participation of environmental scientists was included in the program, as a counter-event to the SRF “arena”. Members of “Rise Up for Change” had declined an invitation to the television broadcast because “climate deniers” such as SVP National Councilor Roger Köppel were invited to the focus group.
In the morning, the climate activists probably interrupted the last discussions in the National Council and called them to the room from the stands. In a video posted by Barbara Steinemann (44, SVP) on Twitter, the group can be seen at the National Council booth. “Again the theater of the children of the climate”, bothered the national councilor.
And the colleague from Thurgau’s party, Verena Herzog (64), cursed “Saubande, allegedly from the climate protectors” and demands high fines. The video shows how the security forces try to take the group. After a brief resistance, they finally allowed themselves to be pulled from the stands.
Protest against COtwo-Law
However: no one seems to have understood what the group literally shouted, neither in the left half nor in the right half of the council. According to parliamentary services, the interruption action lasted less than a minute. Six people were brought from the corridor, personal details had been recorded. Compared to parliamentary services, they would have the COtwo– Law given as a reason for protest.
It appears to be a unique action: with “Stand Up for Change,” the leading movement behind the occupation of the Bundesplatz, nothing is known of a disruption in the National Council, as spokeswoman Frida Kohlmann told VIEW. “Rise Up” is busy elsewhere anyway: Today is the international day of climate protest.
As Greta Thunberg demonstrates in front of the parliament in Stockholm, the Swiss climate movement is also calling for a demonstration. However, the demonstration at Helvetiaplatz in Bern is not approved, as BLICK knows, the activists intend to move around the city. (gbl / SDA)
