The Federal Office of Public Health (BAG) has adjusted its recommendations for children under 12 years of age. It is assumed that children can get the coronavirus as well, but have fewer symptoms and transmit the virus less often.
According to new recommendations released Friday, children with symptoms of the disease should stay home if they have previously had close contact with a person with symptoms of Covid-19. If this contact person tests positive, the child should also be tested; parents should inform the pediatrician.
If the contact person’s test is negative, the child should also stay home while they have symptoms. The school can only return to school 24 hours after the fever has subsided or a severe cough has improved.
The BAG writes that children under the age of 12 should be able to attend school and care facilities if possible. Children in this age group were less likely to be infected with Covid-19 in these facilities than in the family.
With mild cold symptoms like a runny nose, sore throat, and / or mild cough, children may continue to go to school or daycare. The prerequisite is that their general condition is good and that they have not had close contact with a person with Covid-19 symptoms.
However, if the child has a fever and / or severe cough, he should stay home, even if he has not had close contact with a person with corona symptoms. Only 24 hours after the fever has subsided or if the cough clearly clears within three days, you are allowed to go to school or care.
If the fever persists for more than three days or if the cough remains strong for more than three days, a pediatrician should be contacted. If symptoms such as gastrointestinal upset, headache or body aches or loss of smell and / or taste are added, a doctor should also be contacted.
