Children get corona disease just as often as adults, but they show hardly any clear symptoms and are therefore less contagious. This is demonstrated by a new study from the University of Zurich, which was presented on Thursday by the Federal Office for Public Health (BAG).
That worries many parents. How do you deal with this when your kids have a cold? Are you still allowed to go to school? The BAG has issued recommendations on this same issue. They apply to children up to 12 years old.
Only test children if caregiver has Corona
If the child has not had close contact with a confirmed case of corona, according to BAG’s recommendations, he should go to school if possible, even if he has a cold or cough. You should only stay home if you have a bad cough or fever.
There is no talk of a corona test. The only thing is that parents should contact the pediatrician if the cough and fever persist for more than three days. Even if the child loses their sense of taste, only the next steps should be discussed with the doctor.
The recommendations are slightly different if a child has had close contact with a person who tested positive. Then the child should stay home and get tested.
The canton decides on school classes
BAG makes no recommendation in the event that a school child becomes ill from Corona. As soon as three or more children are sick, according to the BAG, the cantonal authorities have to decide, in consultation with doctors. (gbl)
