A rumor about a merger between UBS and Credit Suisse has been circulating for two weeks. finews.ch found in survey: Only a minority believe this in the Swiss financial center.
The latest issue of the business magazine “Bilanz” gave new impetus to rumors of a merger between UBS and local competitor Credit Suisse (CS): It should be between the chairmen of the board of directors Axel weber Y Urs Rohner held specific discussions in the first half of 2020.
In the same article, the rumor was immediately buried again: after the summer holidays, there had been no further talks between the two delegations.
Big poll: clear results
Coincidence or not: finews.ch launched a reader poll with the following content during the Corona shutdown in the first half of 2020 in cooperation with Jupiter Asset Management:
1. Will UBS and Credit Suisse merge after the Corona crisis?
2. Yes, because they will not be able to bear their high costs on their own.
3. Yes, there will be cooperation in some areas.
4. UBS will swallow Credit Suisse.
5. Credit Suisse will swallow UBS.
6. No, both banks will remain independent in five years.
The survey was in the finews.ch-Site published throughout May. Readers can consent to the respective questions with one click.
Cancellation of the elephant wedding
The result is a rejection of the elephant’s wedding: 14,382 finews.chReaders participated in the survey and by 10,321 the case was clear: No, UBS and CS remain independent. That’s more than 70 percent (watch. next graph).

On the contrary, 1,065 respondents said: Yes, it is no longer possible to do it alone. The Swiss financial center believes an acquisition is more likely than a merger.
1,507 survey participants would watch UBS, which CS would swallow. Only 407 assumes the opposite sign: CS would swallow UBS.
All or nothing
Interestingly, the Swiss financial center is taking on an “all or nothing” transaction should it come to that. Because only 1,019 survey participants, which is just under 7 percent, dared to predict that there will be cooperation between the two big banks in some areas.
